Learn About Kris's Story

What inspired you to start your own small business?

"I started creating designs for family and friends as a hobby because I owned a Silhouette machine. In April 2017, while stuck in an unfulfilling job, I had an epiphany that we could turn this passion into a business. Nine months later, I decided not to return to the corporate world and continued to push forward with the venture."

What was your professional background before founding KSH Design Studio?

A Master’s prepared Registered Nurse. With employment at Broadlawns for 23 years and DMACC Nursing Dept for 17 years.

What are some of the key milestones or achievements in your career so far?

"KSH Design Studio has grown significantly over time. It started with etching, but after being approached by a gym manager to create custom t-shirts, the business expanded into new areas without minimum order requirements. We soon added wholesale accounts and began serving multiple locations across several states, will growing in areas including embroidery and laser engraving. With growth, we upgraded to commercial embroidery machines and an advanced laser engraver, as well as upgrading to industrial embroidery machines. During the pandemic, we quickly adapted and resumed operations by May. We focus on custom work for small businesses, offering free pickup and delivery. Logo digitizing is done in-house with a focus on attention to detail."

What is your design philosophy or approach that sets KSH Design Studio apart?

"I aim to complete projects within two weeks and offer free pickup and delivery. While I’m not a graphic designer, I have a strong eye for color and symmetry. I specialize in matching hues, using RGB and CMYK conversions to find Pantone and thread colors, although they don’t always translate perfectly. I work closely with a thread supplier for advice and always provide clients with a “stitch out” sample to ensure accuracy."

Who or what has been the biggest influence on your career and why?

"Networking has played a crucial role in my growth. Being involved in organizations like the Urbandale Chamber, FUSE, West Side Chamber, HBA/PWB, NAWBO, Rotary, and the Rotary DMAM has taught me invaluable lessons on what to do—and what not to do—in business. I’ve built strong relationships and learned from the experiences of others along the way."
